Collaboration Success for Scottish Pork

Collaboration Success for Scottish Pork

Consumer interest in animal welfare and provenance formed the background to the development of a collaborative pig supply chain which won a 2010 Scotland Food and Drink Award in the 'Success Through Working in Partnership' category.

Five partners form the chain

  • Scottish Pig Producers (SPP), Scotland's largest co-operative marketing group for pigs
  • VION UK Ltd, one of Europe's leading food companies operating VION Halls, the largest pig abattoir in Scotland
  • Asda, the UK's second largest retailer
  • the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA)
  • Quality Meat Scotland (QMS), the public body which helps the red meat sector to enhance efficiency and profitability.

The partners built on existing supply chain relationships to reinforce the quality of Scottish pig production and pork products.

The partnership is for the long term and is built around the shared goal of improving sales volumes and values by making sure that the consumer knows about the higher welfare standard of Scottish pork compared to imported products.
