C2 Conference 2010
|
The first Cultivating Collaboration (C2) annual conference, held in March 2010, attracted almost 100 delegates from all over Scotland.
Richard Lochhead, the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, was among the speakers and praised the work of the C2 project, stressing the importance of collaboration on supply chain efficiency and effectiveness.

Addressing the delegates, Mr Lochhead highlighted the importance of open, well integrated supply chains to the nation's food and drink industry, saying: "Working together is essential if we are to enhance Scotland's reputation as a land of food and drink, as well as meeting the ambitious target of increasing the value of the industry to the economy to £12.5 billion by 2017. The Scottish Government has been a strong supporter of the C2 Project and today's event will help raise awareness of the significant opportunities that exist within the food and drink supply chain to improve profitability and sustainability. Through 'Recipe for Success', our national food and drink policy, we have provided considerable support to encourage greater collaboration within Scotland's food and drink supply chains and are keen to build on this success."
Duncan Sinclair Agriculture Manager for Waitrose highlighted one example of collaboration which is happening in the Borders of Scotland. A partnership of three Borders' beef farmers supplying Waitrose UK wide, were encouraged to diversify into egg production. Cackleberry Eggs now supplies 42,000 eggs to Waitrose's Scottish stores each week. Watch a video about Waitrose and Cackleberry Eggs.
John Forteith, Senior Partner in Forteith Foodservice which serves 1500 trade customers in the North West of Scotland, explained how his company developed premium brand fresh produce with suppliers of pork, venison and lamb from the local area. The local food - branded with the name of Argyll - is of high quality and the relationship with Forteith offers the producers a ready market for their meat. The relationship with Angus MacFadyen, the lamb supplier, developed as part of an SAOS/C2 project in the area with the Argyll & Bute Agricultural Forum to improve local sales of local lamb. These relationships mean Forteith's can offer, as a line, premium local meat to restaurants and other customers. Watch a video about Forteith Foodservice and Argyll Premium Brands.
David Sands, whose company David Sands Ltd has 27 stores in Fife and Kinross and employs 600 people, stressed the value of local food and good relationships with local suppliers. He said he was particularly proud of the company's collaborative relationship with Stephens, the Dunfermline-based bakers, which supplies goods to his stores seven days a week. The company sells around 11,000 Stephens hand-made rolls each week. David Sands Ltd now work with 30 local suppliers. Watch a video about David Sands Ltd.
Alan Stevenson, SAOS's Supply Chain Development Director and C2 Project Director commenting on the conference said:
"They often say that two heads are better than one and that's why there is substantial evidence to suggest that working in collaborative supply chains brings efficiencies and many other commercial benefits through good, solid and open working relationships. We are delighted by the wide range of companies and organisations from the Scottish food and drink industry that have come along today and by the positive reaction we have received to date. The C2 project couldn't be delivered without the support of all our partner organisations and together we have:
- Involved 136 companies and 52 organisations in C2 activities
- Delivered workshops and events attracting 210 people
- Provided direct support to 19 supply chains
- Undertaken 2 public procurement projects and produced a new Guide to Public Procurement
- Developed 19 case studies with the help of 32 companies "
